Star Cat in a bag

A short video of our cat playing with a bag we were using to mail something. She was playing more with it while we were eating, but when we got the camera she quickly got bored of it. She's a bit camera shy, you see.

Hawai'i (part two)

Hawai'i (part two)

Take a flashlight to Hawaii. That's what we learned. More than once we wanted to go exploring but failed because of a lack of lighting. We explored the lava tubes (interesting cave-like formations made from lava cooling in stages), but after a certain point in the tube, they stopped putting up lights and you couldn't go farther without a flashlight of your own. [I'd like to point out that more than 3/4 of the first cave we visited was unlit. -Wayne] We tried exploring some caves near a waterfall, but failed because there were no lights at all in the cave. Next time we go to Hawaii, we'll know to BYOF -- bring your own flashlight.  read more »

Hawai'i (Part One)

Hawai'i (Part One)

Delta didn't call my Grandfather or anything, they just cancelled our flight. None of us in our party were let in on this trick until the day of the flight. Apparently Delta used to make daily flights from SLC International to Kona International, but they cut back to two flights a week...without telling anyone. I guess this is how a company going into bankruptcy treats its customers. Or maybe this is how they got to bankruptcy? So after a nice lunch with Grandpa and Uncle Max, we came back to Provo and played games with Jayson and Felicia (upstairs neighbors) until much too late. But we were on vacation, right? That's what you're supposed to do on vacation.  read more »

Sand as an aesthetic experience

After discussing the principles behind an aesthetic experience, my 480r class went outside and created a situation where we might be able to have an aesthetic experience. We originally wanted to put the sand on a pedestal on the middle of BYU's quad, but the gallery director explained that the BYU grounds are outside of his jurisdiction. So, we put the sand on the ground in a pile and watched people walking by.  read more »

Florence, Oregon in October of 2005

I have been told by friends and friends of Mckell Brockbank that they would like to see the place where he died. I have tried in the past to capture the beauty of the place, but never been able to do it justice (or even finish the project). This trip, however, was the 5th year anniversary of his death. I felt like if Mac were alive today, he would have filmed this place many times over. So I decided to do what was most obvious: just film it as it is.  read more »

Measuring the Tide

While in Florence, Oregon this year, I had planned to do some site specific art. However, I have learned that a site which has as much emotional connection in a certain way to me as does Florence makes it very difficult to think of the site in any other way. Florence is a place of contemplative thought and mourning for me, making "art" difficult.  read more »

Tibetan Flags again

Again, I tried to go up Rock Canyon and install some prayer flags. This time I made them more coherent, all using the Target Stores' standard shopping bag. I also thought that, with the increase in number of flags, there would be a stronger presence. Although they looked great in person, while standing inside the installation, as seen from a distance, they looked small and insignificant.  read more »

Just us playing with the cat

We had some requests to show what our cat looks like now, since she's grown since the last video and pictures we've taken. I guess here's a photo of us just doing what we normally do on a weekend with the cat. Pay close attention to her falling off the bookshelves. That makes me laugh every time I see it!

Frames

I have spent the past 8 months working on this idea. Originally, I was trying to engineer a way for building a 10 foot cube (or larger) out of lightweight material that could be quickly set up and quickly taken apart. PVC pipes don't really fit either of those qualifications, but they are cheaper than titanium and they stand out better against the shapes and colors of nature. Plus, we are able to have friends come help build these boxes and interact more with the community.  read more »
