Universal economic troubles

wayne's picture

Unemployment is a very common term around here. In the past half year, Rebecca's work has seen occassional layoffs. Then they took the plunge and dropped 20% of their remaining workforce on Wednesday, including Rebecca. With their stock at 3$ a share now, we don't expect the company to last very long -- or at least not without outsourcing almost everything to India. Which is already the direction they've been going.

So, Rebecca is unemployed. After a 700+ point drop on Wall Street, many companies here are jumping ship and eliminating their workforce. We see moving trucks all the time, people are leaving the area like rats in a burning building. On the positive side, Rebecca now has more time to spend with Paela and I can frantically try and get my pre-thesis defense finished in three weeks.

With pre-thesis looming over my head, I've tried to meet with my three advisors and get the project solidified. Unfortunately, they all have different ideas for how the project should function and I'm on a short deadline. Rebecca and I spent the second half of the week on campus programming and problem solving, at least to finish what we had originally planned.

And Paela has a halloween costume. Again, craigslist came through for us to pick up a 35$ monkey costume for 10$.

[So if anyone has any job leads, feel free to pass it on. I've been doing user interface design/programming and web application development; my master's was in natural language processing, so that's another possibility. Optimally, I'm looking for something that would allow me to work remotely some of the time, so I could be with Paela. -rebecca]
