Synopsis: Perloo is a Montmer, a race of sentient rabbits, who has always wanted to be unnoticed. Being a scholarly montmer, he only wanted to stay in his hole, read his histories and be left alone. When the leader of the Montmers dies and names him as the leader, there are several usurpers who want to claim power for their own.
Review:

What is interesting about the two books we have read by this author is both dealt with complex power issues which I tend to think of as complex adult issues. After thinking about it, I am sure that children are no strangers to power hungry leaders who rule the playground with an iron fist, but reading Avi's books as an adult the themes seem more real to me because I know of the historical figures these tales are meant to emulate.

While this was an entertaining book, it wasn't nearly as strong of a tale as Crispin was. Both were a bit predictable, so that isn't Avi's strongpoint, but the characters were loveable and the themes were universal to the human condition. Possibly a bit contrived, we still enjoyed reading it aloud to each other.

My favorite book written by AVI is The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. I very much recomend that one. I can't say anything about many of his other books, but I enjoyed it much more than Crispin. However, you will find the same theme in this book that you have found in the others of his you have read. Enjoy! -Christy
