fleas and pi

wayne's picture

We've been celebrating Pi day for five years now. Every time, I feel guilty for how dorky the holiday is, but this year, I noticed the popularity this holiday has gained and now I am feeling protective of the obscure holiday that has become too noticed. Regardless, we made key lime pie this year, in order to circumvent the abhorrence I feel towards eating normal pie. It was a good slice of pie.

There is a so-called 'flea market' not far from our house which we went to on Saturday. When I think of flea markets, I usually think of second-hand open air markets meant for antique shopping and resale items. Instead, we walked into a close replica of third-world cheaper-than-Wal-mart dealers. It reminded me of all the times I searched through Brazilian markets on the lookout for something cheap. I was also reminded how there exists a limit to how cheap something can get before you are paying too much for something that is too poorly manufactured. I don't need to say that we spent all our time wandering and amazed that there were so many stalls selling the same goods for the same price. How many barbie-knockoff stalls can exist in a free market?

Paela got some good exercise. She has been having difficulty lately moving onto something new. We take her to the library and she screams when she has to leave. We're doing our best to help her know when it is getting close to the time when we need to leave and helping her blow kisses and say good-bye to the books, but it is still very frustrating to her.

The rest of the week, we worked on thesis data. We're trying to organize things better and get a good subset of entries to choose from for the narrative I will be constructing in the gallery. I had a good chat with Christina McPhee on Tuesday about what this (and other) projects are about. She helped me refocus on how I like to have the viewer/artwork relationship and what needs to be done for my thesis to be cohesive. So currently, I'm working on hardware while Rebecca works on software and we hope to be done by April 27th. Or earlier so I can have time to write my thesis document before we move.
