a Christmas opera

ready for ChurchWe started off the week last Sunday playing some games with Karl and Angela and Chris and Alyssa. Ethan and Thomas and Paela were all nice playing "together" (babies don't really play "together" so much, and Paela really just napped and watched and practiced rolling over...and fussed some, wishing we were outside). We have to make good use of Sunday afternoons since this is the year of early Church for us! Though some weeks (like today) we just want to use it to catch up on sleep, hanging out with friends and family last week was definitely fun.

Tuesday was another late night, which is getting harder and harder on Paela as she starts moving to an earlier bedtime (who told her to do this? I don't know. We would have been fine with 9 o'clock, but she thinks sleeping at 7 or 8 is a better bedtime). Chris saved Paela from being rudely awoken just to pick Wayne up from school, and stayed with her while I was gone. We're trying to find other solutions too. The (consistent) bus doesn't run that late, unfortunately, and biking home at 9 or 10 is not particularly favorable or safe, so historically I just pick Wayne up on Tuesday. But we think we've scoped out some parking near campus, so maybe Wayne can just take the car on Tuesdays since I'm not working Tuesdays right now anyway.

For Valentine's day Paela and I enjoyed a park day with Angela and Thomas, in between naps. Later, Wayne and I watched Thomas and played some video games. Karl and Angela returned the favor and babysat Paela for us Friday night so we could enjoy the opera (merry Christmas ho ho ho).

Operas are pretty scandalous. All about mistresses and people killing other people just for revenge. We really enjoyed the beautiful music (Verdi's Rigoletto), but it was a little disturing what people around us chose to laugh at [In an audience of only rich white people, having people laugh at adulterous behavior possible reflects on the statistical likelihood of many people in the audience viewing their own behavior on the stage]. The singing was fantastic though, so maybe if I can resist reading the supertitles I'd enjoy the opera even more next time!

Saturday was just an errand day -- much busier than I suspected at the start of the day. We ran all over the place trying to get things done before Wayne leaves town on Tuesday. He's off to a conference this week! We'll see if I overdose on grilled cheese while he's gone....
