Joke of the century

Paela tells jokes from time to time. Sometimes she will be playing a game of hide-and-seek/peek-a-boo with a toy. Suddenly, she will get a trickster glint in her eye and will put the toy in plain sight on her lap and ask, "Where'd-it-go?" We'll promptly point to it and with a sparkle in her eye and a grin on her face she will shake her head and inform us that there is no toy on her lap. Let the jokes begin.

Her latest joke is a bit of a knock-knock joke, somewhat akin to the infamous interrupting cow joke. She begins by saying "Pig is sad." We ask her back "Is the pig sad?" and she quickly says "Nah!" and then laughs.

Entourage

Toddlers often have security objects, be they blankets, stuffed animals or pacifiers. Paela has an entourage. When she wakes in the morning and is lifted out of the crib she makes the role call: "Dolly, too?" "Kitty, too?" "George, too?" (and often) "Blankie, too?" With her full entourage stuffed into her tiny arms she is ready to start the day, taking at least one of them -- usually more -- everywhere she goes.

wet summer

Martin was at a conference this week in New Hampshire, so Camilla and I took the quick drive across the border to visit him Tuesday afternoon. It would be nice to have more family live so close. We visited the beach of Lake Winnipesaukee. It was a nice area and perhaps we should visit more often, however Cape Cod is closer.

Paela enjoyed the cool weather, but especially the water she could wade in. Had we not stopped her, she would have surely gone deeper than she should have.  read more »

It's interesting watching language learning as it develops. It is obvious to me that Paela thinks she is clearly saying more than we think she is saying. The days when "Daddy, <blah blah blah> ketchup" magically transforms into a clear "Daddy, I want more ketchup" are fun. It's like all along she knew what she was saying, and one day we are suddenly privy to knowing what she's known this whole time.  read more »

another girl?

Just thought we'd fill you all in (finally) that we're expecting kid #2 this November. They've given me a due date of November 24, and they think (95% sure...) that it looks like a girl. The most unsure 95% I've ever heard, but we'll just translate that to mean that we will spend 95% of our time thinking of girl names and 5% of our time thinking of boy names!

good finds and adventures

Well, Wayne probably ought to write this email, since he and Paela were the busy bumblebees this week. I just did the work thing during the day and hung out with the two of them in the evenings!

Sunday, Ian Davis and Betsy brought their kids over to play and hang out. We had a good time with them, and they brought a deliciously decadent chocolate pie with them; we saved much of that for Tuesday so we could celebrate chocolate day in style.  read more »

A road trip

They promised us rain. The heat usually brings rain because the humidity escalates to a point where it develops into rain, which materializes in mid-air. Every morning, I would check the weather for when the rain would come, and every day they pushed it back more and more. Boston's weather forecasts change every other hour or so. But the rain never came, until Friday night when we were camping in Cape Cod.  read more »

another road trip

_MG_1115

We spent much of the week planning our weekend trip. We had a good time in NYC, our second time in the city, though we could have used more time. We'll have to go again soon!

We were able to visit with my friend, Holly, before she moves to the other side of the country. She was an excellent source of information of all sorts and introduced us to a fabulous Dominican restaurant just across the street from her apartment. She even humored us by coming along to some of the museums we wanted to see.  read more »

New York City 09

Our short anniversary trip down to New York. We visited with Holly and wandered museums. It was fast and hot.
